The use of graphic processing unit (GPU) chips commonly utilized in video game systems can reduce radiation exposure during CT scans by speeding up image processing, according to a report from the American Institute of Physics detailing research at UCSD. By utilizing GPUs in image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), processing time is reduced 100 times. By processing images faster, the IGRT procedure takes less time, thus reducing radiation exposure by 36-72 times the current amount. Reducing radiation is a huge concern as cancer resulting from excess radiation exposure account for approximately 14,500 deaths per year.
