U.C.S.D. and GlySens Inc. are developing an implantable glucose sensor which continuously monitors tissue glucose. The sensor utilizes the glucose oxidase enzyme to produce a chemical reaction in which the oxygen consumed correlates to the glucose level. The sensor is currently in animal testing, however human trials are expected to begin in a few months. The device could revolutionize real-time insulin delivery and Type II medication delivery.
