A U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) team at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is developing gait analysis technology to aid the elderly, people recovering from injuries, and athletes. Gait analysis for those that are not familiar, is the study of human movement such as measuring body movement and muscle activity. Effective gait analysis can result in improved and targeted therapy for gait problems. The system developed by the DOE utilized electrical signature analysis as patients walk on a treadmill, allowing analysis during different phases of lower-body motion. The potential applications of the technology are limitless and present an opportunity for further innovation.
